What is Charitweet?

Charitweet is an idea I came up with one night which came from the simple thought:

If people were charged 1AED for each tweet, would they tweet as much?

Then after a bit of thinking and good will, I came up with:

For every tweet I write in March, I will donate 1AED to charity.

Pretty simple, practical, and cool IMO.

So, what does this have to do with me?

You can do it with me! Doesn’t matter when you start, just do it for a month or week.

My currency isn’t AED..

Set a certain amount that won’t burn a huge hole in your pocket. It all helps eventually. :-)

To which charity though?

Any trusted local/global charity will do. Either record how many tweets as you post them then donate the money at the end of the month or do it daily.

Great! How do I join?

Just tweet something saying that you’re gonna do it with a link to this post if you want. Oh, and don’t forget to add the hashtag – #charitweet.

Share your results if you want! :-)

Are we dead yet…? :-|

GENEVA – The world’s largest particle collider passed its first major test by firing a beam of protons around a 17-mile (27-kilometer) underground ring Wednesday in what scientists hope is the next great step to understanding the makeup of the universe.

After a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen at 10:26 a.m. (0826 GMT) indicating that the protons had traveled the full length of the 4 billion Swiss franc (US$3.8 billion) Large Hadron Collider — described as the biggest physics experiment in history.

“There it is,” project leader Lyn Evans said when the beam completed its lap. (more…)

WordPress 2.6.2 The World

I just finished updating WordPress on here and Big-Show.NET and according to the WP development blog, nothing major was added, just important fixes. :-)

Stefan Esser recently warned developers of the dangers of SQL Column Truncation and the weakness of mt_rand(). With his help we worked around these problems and are now releasing WordPress 2.6.2. If you allow open registration on your blog, you should definitely upgrade. With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password. The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit. However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password. Stefan Esser will release details of the complete attack shortly. The attack is difficult to accomplish, but its mere possibility means we recommend upgrading to 2.6.2.

We die in 7 days :-)

SCIENTISTS are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world.

Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.

The machine is 17 miles long and cost £4.4billion to create.

When its switch is pulled on September 10, this atom-smasher will become a virtual time machine, revealing what happened when the universe came into existence 14 billion years ago. (more…)

World’s Tallest Building — Gets Taller! The World

Woopee! This is in the same country I’m from (And currently living in)

Maybe when it’s completed next year, I’ll post some photos :-D More tutorials coming soon ;)

From: Yahoo!

DUBAI (AFP) – The world’s tallest building just got taller — the Burj Dubai tower in the booming Gulf emirate of Dubai has now reached a height of 688 metres (2,257 feet) and is still growing, developers Emaar said on Tuesday.

It now boasts 160 storeys, the highest skyscraper in the world, Emaar said in a statement.

The skyscraper, set for completion in September 2009, is one of several mega projects taking shape in Dubai, which is a member of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE) federation.

Burj Dubai, which was started in 2004, overtook Taiwan’s Taipei 101 tower as the world’s tallest building when it reached 512 metres (1,533 feet) in April 2007.

It became the tallest man-made structure on the planet, when Emaar announced in April that it has surpassed the 629-metre (2,063-foot) KVLY-TV mast in the United States.

Its eventual height remains a closely-guarded secret, though there is speculation it will reach a final height of 900 metres (2,953 feet).

It had been due for completion in the bustling city state at the end of 2008, but Emaar said in June that “finishing touches” had pushed back the date until September next year.

The skyscraper is being built by a consortium involving Arabtec Construction LLC of the UAE, Samsung of South Korea and Besix of Belgium.

Many building projects in Dubai, which is going through a construction frenzy, have been facing delays caused by shortage of building materials and skilled labour.

‘King of Voiceovers’ Don LaFontaine Dies at 68 A Loss

Trailers will never be the same, you many not know his name, but you know his voice. Here are the details from ETOnline:

Voiceover Master Don LaFontaine has died. He was 68.

LaFontaine, far right, is pictured above with ET’s Mark Steines and Mary Hart, and fellow voiceover artist Randy Thomas.

LaFontaine, known as the “King of Voiceovers,” died Monday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. LaFontaine’s agent, Vanessa Gilbert, tells ET that he passed away following complications from Pneumothorax, the presence of air or gas in the pleural cavity, the result of a collapsed lung. The official cause of death has not yet been released.

Over the past 25 years, LaFontaine cemented his position as the “King of Voiceovers.” Aside from being the preeminent voice in the movie trailer industry, Don also worked as the voice of Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, as well as for CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and UPN, in addition to TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network. By conservative estimates, he voiced hundreds of thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, Coke, and many other corporate sponsors.

He recently parodied himself on a series of national television commercials for Geico. At last count, he has worked on nearly 5000 films, including appearances as the in-show announcer for the Screen Actors Guild and Academy Awards. Based on contracts signed, he has the distinction of being perhaps the single busiest actor in the history of SAG. Don is survived by his wife — singer/actress Nita Whitaker, and three children: Christine, Skye and Elyse.
